Day Cruises in Hanoi

If you’ve been wandering around Hanoi’s Old Quarter and the lakes, you’ll know the city’s charm doesn’t just stop on land. Taking a day cruise on the Red River or along West Lake is a chance to slow down and see things differently , like neighborhoods you wouldn’t notice otherwise, or fishermen casting nets early in the morning.

Don’t expect luxury yachts; these cruises are often on wooden boats or traditional sampans. Sometimes they’re simple, but that’s exactly the point. You get to watch the city breathe around you, with tree-lined quays, small temples, and even the occasional floating markets if you’re lucky and catch them right. My personal favorite spot to start is near Long Bien Bridge. That bridge has history,and crossing it by boat is something else when the afternoon sun hits just right.

A tip? If you’re going in summer, ask for a boat with a shade or plan your trip early morning. The heat on the river can sneak up on you fast. Also, try to chat with the boatmen. They usually have the best stories about old Hanoi and the river’s role in the city’s life. It’s not just a boat trip, it’s a slice of local rhythm.
