Description

Travel to Hoi Village, located in Tan Le commune, Hung Ha district, about 40km from the central city of Thai Binh province. Discover the home of Vietnam’s mat weaving craft, where artisans have been perfecting their skills for centuries. Learn about the history of mat weaving in Hoi Village, which dates back to the Early Le-Ly dynasties in the 10th-11th centuries. Hear how Pham Don Le, a young scholar, brought special mat-weaving techniques from China in the 15th century, elevating the quality of Hoi mats and making the village famous for its craft. See how the village’s geographical location, between the Red River and the Luoc River, provides ideal conditions for growing sedge and jute plants, the main raw materials for making mats. Watch as artisans select, dye, and weave sedge and jute threads into beautiful mats, using both traditional and modern techniques. Admire the variety of Hoi mats, which come in different patterns, weaving techniques, and sizes. Some are flower-patterned, others plain. Some are single-woven, others twine. Learn how mechanical looms have increased production, allowing artisans to create up to 40 pieces a day. Despite competition from plastic and bamboo mats, Hoi Village’s sedge and jute mats remain popular for their cool and airy feel, especially in hot summer days.
